Celebrating Black History Month #3

Our hymnals and songbooks have recognized the importance of the music of African Americans in our worship and formation. It's interesting to note the increase in African American songs included in our hymnals and songbooks over the years:

Spirituals in our hymnals:

  1. Methodist Hymnal (1966): 5 (called "American Folk Hymns" rather than Spirituals)
  2. United Methodist Hymnal (1989): 30
  3. The Faith We Sing (2000): 12
  4. Worship & Song (2011): 5

Hymns, Songs and Prayers other than Spirituals by African Americans in our hymnals:

  1. Methodist Hymnal (1966): none
  2. United Methodist Hymnal (1989): 30
  3. The Faith We Sing (2000): 7
  4. Worship & Song (2011): 35
