This classic hymn, well-known to Lutherans and Europeans, has never appeared in a Methodist hymnal. Its strength of text and tune is similar to hymns such as, Lift High the Cross (United Methodist Hymnal no. 159) and God Is Here (United Methodist Hymnal no. 660), but its minor tonality sets it apart. It is suitable for Reformation Sunday observance, Laity Sunday, Pentecost, or any Sunday with an emphasis on the church. It is also suitable as an opening hymn.
